It’s that time of year again – when we have a chance to sit back, catch our breath and look at where we’ve come from. Year 1 and Year 2 were both pretty quiet in comparison to Year 3 – it was a long, slow build that finally started to catch fire in 2016. We aren’t sure where 2017 is going to take us, but we’ve got some amazing plans in place.
All that comes later, though. Right now is a moment for celebration and we’re thrilled to bring back one of the most confounding beers we’ve ever produced. In addition to all the great beer we’ll have at the Anniversary Party and the trivia and the spelling bee – we’ll also have the culmination of a series of mind bending puzzles. You’ll need to solve the first three to have any hope of solving the fourth and everyone who successfully solves the fourth will be able to enter into a drawing for a chance to name our next barrel aged beer – a Belgian Quad we’re calling Herge.

Puzzle #4 – Don’t Count the Spaces
I know there isn’t a puzzle anniversary but if there were one – this would be it. We’re shaking things up – way up….. More details later in this post. First I want to talk about what we’ll be doing to celebrate our anniversary this year – January 14, 2017 starting at 12 PM and going until 10 PM.
First off – we’ll be releasing Drie Belgian Triple IPA in 22 oz. bottles. If you haven’t seen our new labels you’ll be amazed. They came out looking like a work of art. On December 17th we’ll be releasing the first of our barrel aged beers. Six months ago we brought in a set of bourbon barrels from Kentucky and brewed up a batch of our Imperial Stout – Bison. It’s a remarkable beer with tons of chewy, roast, dark malted notes that range from prune and raisin all the way through chocolate and coffee. It takes 11 malts to create all the roasted notes that dominate the nose and each one adds a layer of complexity. When we sat around talking about the first beer to go into a barrel there was no question that Bison was the top of heap.

Ginger, cinnamon and clove combine with an entrancing dark malt bill to create a ruby body with raisin and caramel overtones and a spicy, lengthy finish.
It’s that time of year again – Tannenbaum Christmas Ale returns to taps and shelves across Columbus. Cases have already started rolling out but it won’t be showing up on tap for a little while yet. If you’re looking for a place to find a six pack or three, check our handy dandy six pack finder.
In the meantime – it’ll be available in our taproom for a very limited time starting Friday, November 4. Come on in and fill up while you can!
Season of the Witch
Thick, luscious and creamy – cinnamon, clove, allspice and pumpkin float up out of the dense head, it’s as close as you can get to pumpkin pie in a glass.
It’s our first year producing a Pumpkin beer and we’re pretty stoked about how it turned out. We partnered with the Canal Market District in Newark and their local produce suppliers to source 150 pounds of pumpkins grown in Licking County. With those in hand we travelled to Moe’s Original BBQ in Granville and roasted them all up during a slow night at their kitchen.
We combined all of the pumpkins, a hefty, dark malt bill and our own pumpkin pie spice blend with a smattering of hops and our favorite yeast to produce the delicious Fall seasonal we’re calling Season of the Witch.

The two questions we were asked most often from the time we opened were – “Are you guys going to do a Christmas Ale?” and “When are you going to do a Pumpkin beer?”
We knew right from the get go we’d need to produce a Christmas beer – and thus Tannenbaum was born (and yes, we’re brewing it again this year – it went into a tank today as a matter of fact). But the pumpkin question has always plagued us – as the beer schedule has turned to seasonal domination the pumpkin slot has moved earlier and earlier until this year when the first pumpkin beers started hitting shelves in July.

This time out we get a chance to team up with a crew who seems to enjoy it just as much as we do. The trucks are lined up, the tents are ordered, the date has been set and now the tickets have arrived. Tickets for the 2016 edition of Wing Wars go on sale at the taproom beginning Tuesday, May 17 at 3 PM. Tickets are still very limited but we do have more this year than last. Based on how popular it was last year I’d recommend getting here ASAP.
We’re doing a few things differently this year based on how things went – first of all we’re only bringing in food trucks, and to speed up service we’ll have a full set of 8 trucks. Second, we’ll be holding the event on a Sunday. Lastly, we’re going to crown a single champion wing based only on the popular vote – we’ve got a trophy and everything.

It’s been an astounding first three years – none of us expected we’d find ourselves here in just three short years. From Kevin and I working our day jobs while opening to a fully staffed brewery, taproom and sales and delivery team it’s been an amazing journey.
