So many of our greatest memories revolve around music: your first LP/cassette/CD, that first Junior High dance, that perfect road trip mix…. The Artists Series is our chance to thank all of those artists who have brought so much to our lives. Music makes our worlds go round – it makes a sunny day unforgettable, a sad time bearable, keeps us company in solitude and inspires us to do our best.
It’s hard to imagine what a quiet brewery would be like, but ours echoes with a constant joyous noise. If you’ve seen us at work you can understand exactly how important music is to our day-to-day working and the Artists Series can bring you inside the brewery musically and emotionally.
The work that we do creating beers is an amazing artistic venture, and the other role of the Artists Series is to let us stretch our creative muscles. Sometimes IPA’s, sometimes lagers, sometimes a beer style you’ve never heard of – the one thing you can be sure of is that it’s going to be an awesome trip inspired by the music that fires us emotionally and artistically.

To craft this beer we sat down with Angela, Chris and Billy to pick their brains about the beers they love and why they love them. At its heart we built a classic Midwest IPA – with a maltier sense than a coastal IPA and with heavy doses of Centennial to give it a piney, resin nose. We backed up the Centennial base with notes of citrus and spice from Chinook and Cascade and finally topped it off with the lightest touch of Simcoe to lighten everything up and give it just a hint of West Coast. It’s our answer to the question of where can we go from here – both for our beer and for Angela and the Howlin’ Moons – we hope you all enjoy it.

Pairing Franco-Belgian malts, Belgian Candi Sugar and a rare, nearly forgotten yeast we created this towering monument to Dylan. From the first it erupts with clove, pepper, spicy phenols and fruity orange and pear esters. It mellows and allows a rich, delicate sweetness to come sweeping across paired with a mild bitter and matched with the heaviest, traditional Belgian carbonation it’s a beer that takes the simplest of ingredients and combines them to create a beer greater than its parts. A classic, marble-statued Belgian Golden Strong Ale to honor one of our greatest living artists – for Bob Dylan and for everything he’s done for us, for music and for our artistic endeavors past, present and future.
We created this gigantic double IPA using towering amounts of Pilsner malt to get the cleanest, crispest body and then used pound after pound of hops featuring only “M” and “C” and topped it all off with a hard-charging, clean burning yeast designed for gigantic hoppy IPA’s. And that’s where most double IPA’s would stop – with a dank, hop explosion. But we weren’t content to stop there. We took another huge dosing of whole leaf hops and crafted a mammoth torpedo to circulate the beer through giving the hops another layer of fresh, unfiltered and uncontained aroma. All of that sits on a 9.8% ABV body that cuts through the hops and brings the bitter out in a slow, sustained symphony.
We started with a giant dose of wheat, a tiny smattering of hops and a classic American Hefeweizen yeast – to match those mild notes we brought along a huge helping of citrus peel and coriander. What comes through the dense, pillowy head is a light, sweet, sessional wheat beer with a mild maltiness, a short bitter and a delightful hint of orange, spice, clove and banana to round out the beer. We hope you enjoy the beer as much as we enjoy the music – a classic representation of the style for the beer and the music.
We’re thrilled to introduce the Artists Series: The Decemberists IPA. Dominated by hop notes – grapefruit, orange, tropical fruit, mango and the tiniest hint of resin – the nose and the hops slide back as the malts come forward, a sneaky burst of toffee and dark, raisin. Underneath the experience, a slow, building bitter takes shape – as all the parts come into harmony and rise in a symphony of flavor with the slightest tease of a lingering sweetness on the tongue. It’s our way of building a beer to match a band that combines magical, lyric storytelling with simple, haunting and epically beautiful music.
The Artists Series 4: Sky Blue Sky IVL (India Vienna Lager). At its heart, a traditional Vienna Lager with roasted, deep, malty notes – European lager hops provide the bittering backdrop and flavor undertones. Layered on top is an unexpected depth and complexity of a huge and heavy American IPA – redolent with pine, resin, grass and tropical hints. It’s a beer designed for an adventurous spirit and dedicated to an album with layer upon layer of complexity and meaning.
To honor one of our favorite bands operating in one of our favorite genres of music we created the happiest beer we could imagine. Erupting with West Coast IPA notes of grapefruit, juicy orange and lemon, this towering beer lays it down thick and heavy without being a palate wrecker. With a subtle balance of sweet and alcohol to balance out all the hop notes it’ll put a big old smile on everyone’s face.
We brought back a classic technique called first hopping and then hopped it every 10 minutes through a 90 minute boil to create this giant IPA dedicated to an album that represents a pinnacle in the bluegrass/folk genre. Big grapefruit, pineapple and orange notes jump out of the dense, creamy head and are balanced by a focused bitter and a mild malty note. It’s a beer that fits in well with other beers past, present and future.
The inaugural beer in our Artists Series line, BOAT starts from a Pacific Northwest IPA and puts on our unique spin on it. A heady mix of passionfruit and light citrus notes slam together with a sneaky late bitter and sweet, balanced finish to create a beer nearly as lyrical as the band it takes its inspiration from.
